Boy, did I have a great time at Walmart today! I was attempting to do a price match with Meijer for Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers. They were .89 this week. I went and picked up 15 bags, some with sauce and some plain. I thought the ad said that the ones in sauce were included. I over looked the word excludes. They listed every single one in sauce separately and I mistakenly thought they were saying they were included. The cashier points that out. I say" oh, I'm sorry I over looked that. I will just take the plain ones then". He goes to price adjust the 5 without sauce. He didn't know the reason code for the price adjustment on the first few he tried, then someone yelled it to him. Some how my total for 5 items costing .89 is $5 something. Obviously he rang something up wrong. I did't say anything because I figured it would be faster to just get it fixed at the customer service desk.
He then rang up my 2 newspapers and told me my total. I handed him 5 of my veggie coupons. He scrutinized them. Then he told me I could't use the coupon because the item is .89 which would make the coupon pay me to get the veggies. I did't argue about that because it is true, it would(one of the reasons I went there for the price adjustment). He kept staring at the coupons, all the while customers were piling up behind me(I also waited 15 -20 mins before being rung up).He noticed the picture had broccoli and cheese and told me I can't use the coupon because it is only for the kind with sauce(what is pictured) and I put those back. I explained to him the wording says save $1 on any variety. He looked at it again. He finds a new reason, the coupon says one per purchase. I tell him that I am purchasing 5, each bag is a purchase and the whole order is a transaction. He then argues no. I reached over and grabbed my coupons and said "I'm done here" and left my whole order . I was too mad to talk any more. This guy was acting like the coupons were coming from his pocket! Did he attempt to scan the coupons even once? NO!
If I hadn't been so mad and felt bad for the customers behind me I would have demanded a manager come over to correctly ring me up. He did say when he was trying to find the reason code that he works in jewelry. Still, he didn't need to make up his own interpretation of the wording on the coupon. I am beginning to think Walmart just isn't worth my trouble. Their lines always take 15 minutes or more to get through and at least 1 out of 4 times they give me a problem with my coupons.
I plan on sharing my experience with Walmart through an email later tonight. I will wait until they respond (or 2 weeks if they don't respond) to decide whether or not I will join my mother in law in boycotting them.
There are too many other places to shop to put up with bad customer service. I know my coupons add a little more work to the cashiers job, that is why I am always super nice and cheerful with the cashiers. It takes quite a bit of effort on my part to be so cheery with them, I am not normally that way. It is against my nature, lol.

I had a bad experience today with coupons too. At CVS i was buying 3 oxy shave creams and had 3- $1.50 off coupons, (along with other items). AFter he rang up my items he then very carefully read each and ever coupon. Since the oxy ones said on per customer he said i could only use one coupon, despite the fact that i was purchasing 3. So i told him to take 2 off. He never tried to ring the coupons up either. I've never see anyone review my coupons first, taking 3-4 minutes just to read them. As a former cashier of walgreens i only looked at the coupons if they didn't ring up right. Why do some people just try to find ways to hassle you?
Sorry that happened to you. I only use self check out at Wal Mart because I don't need them interpreting my coupons. Hope they respond back to you asap!
I quit shopping at Walmart for this reason. I have had numerous problems and decided I would only go there if I had one item or one coupon, but I have even had a problem with one coupon there. I feel like they are negative and defensive. There are too many other places to shop to be treated that way. If I have to pull out a manual and MAKE them accept me as a customer, it is not worth it! Meijer has replaced them for me!
I agree. I have never had a problem at CVS, Walgreens or Meijer. The first time I tried Walmart they would not accept any of my internet coupons. They said they were "fraud" w/o scanning them first. I asked for a manager and he said the same thing. They refused to scan them and told me the website I used was fraud. I told them I have you the exact same coupons at other stores and never had an issue. I haven't shopped there since.
So sorry to hear you had such a lousy experience today. I wish they would standardize their policy. It depends on what day and what checker I get as to what the rules are!
Oh, I would definitely contact Corporate! Walmart has almost the worst service and really needs to do a better job at explaining policies and etiquette to all that interface with the customer.
I have not shopped at Walmart for nearly a month for these exact reasons. I was tired of being treated like a criminal every time I used a coupon, especially internet printables! You're right, the cashiers act like it's coming out of their pockets! I happily take my coupons to my local Target, where I have never had any problems. Walmart is just not worth my time!
The exact same thing happened to me yesterday at Walgreens when I tried to buy 4 Skippy PBs with 4 $0.40 coupons. I wasn't even trying to get the things close to free! She read them very intently and then said I could only use one for one of the jars. I very nicely told her I'd never heard of such a thing (I haven't) and she said she could get her manager right then but that she'd let it go this time. Well, thanks!!! I can only think that more and more people are trying to use coupons in this economy and corporate is pushing for cashiers to be as conservative as possible with accepting them.
Haven't been to Walmart in years & don't miss them a bit!
Sorry about the bad experience, Toshia!
Your MIL
P.S. GREAT blog, Girl!
(((((HUGS)))) That sucks. I hope you email them and let them know EXACTLY what happened.
Hi! You entered my Scentsy drawing and I was just letting you know you need to leave a link to your blog post about Scentsy for the entry to count. Good luck!! AND PS I totally agree with you about Walmart not being worth the time. I avoid it like the plague!
anon 1- I am sorry you had trouble at CVS! i haven't had any problem using coupons other than at Walmart:(
Savvy saving momma- the one time I used self check out with coupons the machine called the attendant over, go figure!
Sisters of savings- I love Meijer too, except the limit of 2 coupons doubling- that makes for a long day at self scan for me, lol.
Lori- I had trouble using IPs at walmart once after I had used them the visit before. I wrote an email to them after i got home and a week later they called me and said they retrained the cashiers and I shouldn't have trouble using them again.
Precious- I agree they need to work on standardizing their policies and make sure all the cashiers follow those rules.
-Andrea- they do have the worst cs I have experienced in a long time.
Dawn- it had been over a month since i shopped there. You just never know if things will go smoothly or horribly wrong there
Anon 2- they will be losing a lot of customers if that is what they are telling their cashiers to do.
MIL- HI and Thanks!
Alanajo- Thank you, and I will be emailing them as soon as ds sleeps longer than five mins, lol
jenny- I think you mistook a follower of my blog for me! That does look like a very nice giveaway though.
I never shop at Walmart - it just isn't worth it to me. They use illegal help, pay 90% of their workers very little, care nothing about the environment but are super quick to pretend when it means they can sell more (their fake organic stuff and willingness to blacktop over a turtle nesting ground instead of waiting the extra month)... They also are an eyesore because they just leave huge empty buildings so they can move into another one.
They run out small businesses too.
I don't think I saved much when I did shop there b/c the stuff they sold was usually of lower quality and I always added stuff to my cart since there was so much there.
Down with walmart!
