Raising the Budget

I have officially been "over budget" for a few weeks now. I am finding it hard to stick with $200 a month for food.I'm not sure if it is because of the impulse purchases, the overload of great deals so far this summer(NOT complaining!), the bounty of delicious ripe fruits and veggies on sale, or what.

Instead of beating myself up over this I have decided to increase our budget to $300/month for now. I have a lot on my mind and to do list at this point and worrying about keeping the grocery spending so low is a waste of what little energy I have. About half of what I have been buying is stockpile items, the other half is to be used on a weekly-monthly basis.The stockpile items will make it easier once I do decide to take the budget back down to $200.

The cherries were a splurge. My almost 6 year old has made a point to tell me how much she loves them anytime she sees them in an ad or on t.v.! If you haven't done the kool aid- sugar- mac and cheese deal yet peninsular sugar is on a 4 day sale right now 1.49/4lbs and is a much better tdeal than the Meijer sugar 2.69/5lbs. I wish I had looked at the website before going shopping!

Survey Site: Survey Savvy

Survey Savvy is a unique survey site. In addition to earning money for taking surveys yourself, you earn every time your referrals complete a survey. That is a pretty nice perk, but it gets even better. Not only do you earn when your direct referrals take a survey, you also earn when your referrals' referrals take surveys.

Another nice aspect of Survey Savvy is the very low payment threshold. To request payment you only need $1 in your account. Your payment will arrive as a check 4-6 weeks after you submit your request.

He Woke Me Up at 4 AM for This...

My husband has to be at work pretty early in the morning. Monday last week he was looking for munchies before heading out. Below is what he found when he opened a box of cakesters I purchased at Walgreens the day before...


Three of the six packages were not sealed on one end. He came into the bedroom, woke me up, and made me look. I groggily told him I would take care of it(and refrained from yelling "LEAVE ME ALONE!).

Good thing he opened the box up side down. If he hadn't he would have A) grabbed a pack that was sealed right and not discovered the 3 goof ups until later(and wouldn't have disturbed me at 4 AM) or B) he would have grabbed a dud and it would have fallen on the floor.

Oh, and I guess I need to watch expiration dates at Walgreens as well. These expired in May.

When I called Kraft they were very apologetic about the packaging error and said they would be sending me a coupon for a replacement with in the next 7-10 days). The coupon arrived only 4 days later! I was happy the call went straight to a person who could help me! Wonderful customer service:)

Pregnancy Update 27 weeks (no where near as long as the last one!)

Wednesday last week we went for another sonogram at the perinatologist's. The main purpose of this one was to do a thorough check of the baby's heart.

I am so happy to report the cardiologist was very pleased with what he saw! He said her heart looks perfectly healthy and he couldn't find any problems or irregularities!

The perinatologist then did another thorough check for any birth defects (they didn't find any!)and took another look at her nuchal fold. The fluid build up was pretty much gone(some remained, but he said it was insignificant now). I asked if the brain looked okay, since that is why we were first sent to this doctor- my ob said the front part of her brain looked thick which could mean down's syndrome. That also looked completely normal now!My husband and I are so relieved to be given this kind of news after the months of worry the first set of sonograms caused. I am still preparing myself for the worst, but I am almost certain everything is fine with this little girl.

I wont have to go back to the specialist any more, but I will have to go in for a non stress test weekly and sonograms monthly from here on out at my normal obs. We are down to 10-13 more weeks before the new baby gets here and it doesn't seem like enough time(though I can't wait to snuggle her)! We have so much to do to prepare.

Chicken and Squash Saute with Rice

I originally saw this recipe on some weight loss show while channel surfing. I couldn't find the recipe by googling it and I don't know what it was called.I did some minor tweaking to make it more filling and to make it stretch further. It is cheaper to make if you can get the squash in season or grow your own! You might try replacing the squash with sweet potatoes too.

Ingredients:

butternut squash (2 1/4lbs 2.69 @ 1.19lb!)
large red onion (.42)
1lb chicken (1.99)
1 jar marinara/pasta sauce (free)
4 tbsp evoo(.21)
1 c cooked brown rice (.35)
italian seasoning to taste (.02)

Total: 5.68/serves at least 6 (.95 a serving)


Directions:

peel the squash, cut in half and remove the seeds and pulp -cut up into bite size pieces. Cut the onion and chicken into bite size pieces.

saute the chicken in 2 tbsp olive oil until cooked through. place on a plate and cover with foil to keep warm

saute the veggie mix in remaining olive oil until tender (7-10 minutes)

return chicken to pan, add the sauce, cooked rice and seasoning

simmer 5-10 minutes and serve

Our Reviews:

The Husband- He liked it. He thinks it's better with the rice(the first time had no rice).

Me- Much better the second time around. The first time I didn't cook the veggies enough and parts were hard. Make sure you cook the veggies long enough!

The nearly six year old girl- She took one look and decided she did NOT like it. In fact, she would choose to go to bed 2 1/2 hours early instead of try it if given the choice. Pie? She tried it and ate 4-5 more bites when pie was mentioned(I know, I know- you shouldn't bribe your kids with treats...).

The one and a half year old boy- He asked for thirds. Need I say more?

I only intended to get the steak, sour cream, kool aid bundle, lysol and tomatoes today BUT there was a sample lady for the rhodes rolls. While I was down that isle the sara lee caught my eye and I had to get those before they were out of stock(the supply was already dwindling at 11am on the 1st day of the sale!). I'm going to try and get back out for more of the cheaps/freebies at Meijer this week. We can always use sugar at .69 a bag(and the free kool-aid and mac & cheese are great for lazy summers and bartering with!).

I haven't had a clue what to make for dinner the past few weeks, so I thought it best to bring back the menu plan! It really did help a ton when I was making one before. I thing the kids are getting sick of the last minute junk I pull together too.
